Comments and Mentions

Comments and mentions bring collaboration directly into the model. Instead of describing a problem in an email, you attach a comment to the exact element it concerns, and when you need someone’s input, you mention them to bring them into the thread.

Commenting on a Model Element

Every element on the canvas supports comments:

  1. Select the activity, event, or gateway you want to discuss.
  2. Open the element menu and choose Add comment (or use the comment action in the element’s popover).
  3. Type your feedback and save it: the thread is attached to that element.

A comment indicator appears on the element so everyone can see at a glance that there’s a discussion attached.

Commenting on a Process

You can also comment on the process as a whole rather than a single element. Use this for high-level feedback (naming, scope, or publish readiness) that doesn’t belong to one activity.

Mentioning Teammates

To pull someone into a discussion:

  1. Open the comment box and type @ followed by a teammate’s name.
  2. Select the person from the list that appears.
  3. Finish and save your comment: the mentioned person is notified.

Mentions make sure the right person sees the comment, even if they don’t have the model open.

To find your own mentions, open the user menu and choose My Mentions (it shows a count badge when something is waiting), or use the My Mentions block on the welcome page. Opening a mention takes you straight to the thread.

The Comments Panel

The comment indicator on a model element, process, dashboard, data table, or simulation opens the comments slide-in, which lists every thread for that surface:

  • New Thread starts a new discussion.
  • Show resolved includes settled threads in the list; switch it off to focus on what is still open.
  • A thread card opens the conversation. Use Previous thread and Next thread to walk through the open ones, and Mark as Resolved or Reopen thread when a discussion is done.
  • In the composer, Send posts your comment; Ctrl+Enter (⌘+Enter on Mac) sends without clicking. Hover your own message for Edit message and Delete message.

Managing Threads

Comment threads on a model behave like threaded discussions:

  • Reply to a comment to continue the conversation in context.
  • Resolve a thread once the discussion is settled, so the element shows as clean.
  • Reopen a resolved thread if the issue comes back.

Threads stay with the model, so anyone opening the process later can see the full history of decisions and feedback.

Comments are available with a Process Foundation seat and above, and threads are visible to everyone with access to the process. If a teammate cannot add comments, check their role in the Organization Settings.

Best Practices

  • Comment on the element, not the process, when feedback concerns a specific step: it’s much easier to act on.
  • Mention the owner when you need approval or an answer.
  • Resolve threads when done to keep the model tidy and signal that feedback was addressed.
